“The first time I visited Cologne, sure, I was impressed with the massive 800-year-old cathedral, but I was even more enthralled that right next to it stood one of Europe’s most vaunted “grand hotels.”
When it opened in the 1840’s, the Dom Hotel instantly became one of Europe’s grandest grand hotels. Having survived two world wars and a succession of reimaginings, the building’s reopening in mid-2025 will usher in a new page in European “grand hotel” history. The iconic Althoff Dom Hotel will have front-row-center seat to the magnificence of Cologne, and one of the hotel’s many features will be a joint venture with 4711, the historic company which created “Eau de Cologne” in the 18th-century. The Althoff Dom Hotel will be noted for gourmet cuisine, elaborate contemporary design, an ahead-of-state-of-art spa – and a rooftop restaurant and terrace overlooking the city.
