“The tall beige concrete grain silo has been a not very appealing feature of the Cape Town waterfront since 1922. All of a sudden, it’s being transformed into one of the most exciting buildings in Africa – with, at its summit, one of the most extraordinary hotels in the world.”
The Silo Hotel is the latest member of South Africa’s prestigious Royal Portfolio, with its Royal Malewane safari lodge, La Residence in Franschhoek, Birkenhead House in Hermanus and the One Above penthouse in Cape Town.
The Silo is destined to be one of the most exciting hotels of 2017. And 2018. And 2019. The old Cape Town grain silo has been repurposed by British superstar architect Thomas Heatherwick into the vast Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), opening in the fall of 2017, and crowned by the gob-smacking 28-room Silo Hotel. Each room and suite has vast floor-to-ceiling “bubble” windows and a balcony, and has views of Table Mountain, the waterfront and the harbor. The Silo Hotel will be filled with one-of-a-kind furnishings and extraordinary art. Its restaurant, bar and rooftop deck are destined to become “musts” for locals and on the itinerary of visitors to Africa’s most beautiful city.
